Oral pathology is a core subject, the link between basic science and clinical dentistry and medicine. Oral pathology is that part of pathology and a branch of dentistry concerned with the scientific study of the causes and effects of oral diseases an understanding of which is essential for diagnosis and for the development of rational treatment and preventive programs. The department of oral pathology and microbiology, focuses on nature, identification and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions as well as associated structures. The specialty is a confluence of basic sciences and clinical dentistry where UG and PG students learn the conduct of routine blood and urine analysis and histopathological examinations. The department is also actively conducting research in oral cancer using advanced immuno-histochemical methods, besides the microbiological aspects of oral infections. The modern histopathological and microbiological lab is equipped with semi- automatic microtome, tissue processor, multi-projection DIGISCOPE, research microscope with fluorescence, phase contrast, polarising microscope, and dark field microscope attachments, labs for UG and PG student and a pathology museum with a collection of rare specimens.
