Oral, Maxillofacial and Reconstructive surgery is the branch of dentistry which is an internationally recognized surgical specialty which bridges the gap between dentistry and general surgery. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a specialist surgeon treating the entire craniomaxillofacial complex: anatomical area of the mouth, jaws, face, and skull, as well as associated structures. These include a range of common oral surgical problems (eg. impacted teeth, dental implants), jaw and congenital facial disproportion, facial trauma, oral cancer, salivary gland disease, temporomandibular joint disorders, and various benign pathologies (eg. cysts and tumours of the jaws).
Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons are the only ones which works in close conglomeration with Hospital Dentistry and Emergency care with being part of Trauma Team as well as part of surgical team for treating pathologies of head and neck region such as tumors and oral cancers. Training is rigorous with three year post graduate degree and additional fellowships both at national and international levels for gaining expertise to perform complex surgical procedures under general anesthesia in operation theatres with basics of Intensive care in post-operative patients.
